YouTube is reportedly slowing-down Firefox load times following crackdown on ad-blockers
Reports are emerging of a five-second delay experienced by users when loading YouTube videos in non-Chrome browsers, specifically Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge, following YouTube's recent crackdown on ad-blockers.
Interestingly, the delay disappears when users modify their user agent to Chrome, suggesting a possible browser-related issue. However, since the delay isn't universal, it may also be related to specific user accounts.
Google has responded to the issue, stating that, “To support a diverse ecosystem of creators globally and allow billions to access their favorite content on YouTube, we’ve launched an effort to urge viewers with ad blockers enabled to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium for an ad free experience. Users who have ad blockers installed may experience suboptimal viewing, regardless of the browser they are using.”
Given that both Firefox and Edge have built-in ad and tracking blockers, it is feasible that the users who reported the delay had these features enabled, or Google may have mistakenly identified these features as active when they were not.
Interestingly, the problem does not appear when using the uBlock Origin extension. Therefore, users experiencing the delay on Firefox who do not wish to use a user agent switcher workaround, could consider using this extension.
