Mozilla launches Firefox 116: ends support for older Windows and macOS versions, introduces new features and security enhancements
Mozilla has rolled out Firefox 116, the first version of the browser that doesn't support Windows 7, 8 and 8.1, as well as macOS Sierra 10.12, High Sierra 10.13, and Mojave 10.14, as previously announced in June. Users on these operating systems will be automatically migrated to Firefox 115.1.0 ESR, which will provide support until September 2024.
The new version brings multiple enhancements, including improved keyboard controls for the Sidebar switcher, the ability to copy and paste files directly into Firefox, and a separate volume control for the Picture-in-Picture feature.
Firefox 116 also boosts the browser's HTTP/2 upload performance and allows users to modify existing text annotations within the browser. It addresses 14 unique security issues, enhancing the overall security. The update also includes developer-focused improvements like support for CSP3 external hashes. For Linux users, Firefox 116 provides the option between Wayland-only or X11-only builds, removing unnecessary components.
