Zotero 8 brings unified citation dialog, improved reading, note tabs and Linux ARM support

Zotero 8 is now available as the latest release of this free and open-source reference management software, building on the redesigned foundation set by Zotero 7. The update introduces a unified citation dialog, which consolidates previous dialogs into one interface with both list and library modes. List mode enables efficient searching across all Zotero libraries, while library mode offers a targeted browser for collections or specific libraries.

Building on usability, annotations made on PDFs, EPUBs, and webpage snapshots now display directly under their parent attachments in the items list. The reading experience has also been enhanced with a new appearance panel in the reader, giving users quick access to settings and new themes. Additionally, webpage snapshots viewed in reading mode now appear cleaner, as unnecessary elements are removed for better readability.

Following these interface improvements, users can now open notes in tabs in addition to separate windows. The tabs' menu has been refined for faster keyboard navigation. Zotero now keeps attachment filenames automatically updated with their parent item metadata, and the logic for attachment title renaming has been further improved when handling multiple or non-primary attachments.

Rounding out the release, Zotero 8 provides a Linux version for ARM64 devices, improved user interface elements, tag autocomplete, a note field in the Zotero Connector, and other enhancements to streamline research workflows.
