Obsidian Sync now supports headless operation for workflow automation, CI pipelines & more

Obsidian has introduced a headless client for Obsidian Sync, allowing users to synchronize vaults without using the traditional desktop application. This update responds to the needs of developers and advanced users who require integration with automation tools.

Building on this, Obsidian Headless enters open beta and can be installed for use from the command line. The new client is particularly targeted at continuous integration pipelines, software agents, and workflow automation scenarios. Users can run commands to pull the latest changes or keep files continuously updated, supporting hands-off synchronization across various environments.

From a security perspective, Headless Sync maintains parity with the desktop version by employing the same end-to-end encryption and privacy protections for all data transfers. This feature is essential for organizations handling sensitive notes and knowledge bases.

Regarding file handling, a prebuilt native add-on for setting file creation timestamps (birthtime) is now available for Windows and macOS. This preserves original creation dates when downloading files from the server, aiding file provenance in archival workflows. In contrast, Linux systems do not support birthtime, so the add-on is omitted; syncing proceeds with regular timestamp handling.
