This web app offers many features built into the spreadsheet UI without requiring any extensions. I like it.

The problem is the lack or inconvenience of frequently used core features like AutoFill. For example, you set the A column property to Date. Enter today's date in the first cell. You want to enter dates consecutively in the remaining rows. In Google Sheets and MS Excel, you simply click the dot in the bottom right corner of the cell and drag it to the desired rows. How about Grist? I...

Comments and Reviews

Comment summary: Grist receives praise for its flexibility in arranging data, open-source nature, and handy features such as exporting to SQLite and fine-grained access controls. Users appreciate customization through plugins and forms, and remark on its developer-friendly approach. While most feedback is strongly positive, one user notes that core features like AutoFill are less intuitive compared to Google Sheets or Excel.

An impressive and ever developing app that gives you a host of ways to display, arrange and analyse your data. A desktop version is now available and so far as I can see it has no restrictions on the number of records. The free version on-line restricts you to 5000.

  • Focus on privacy and giving back the power to the user (free/libre licence, self-host and local versions, documents are portable as SQLite DB)
  • Efficient and reliable (based on the repository, it seems testing is taken seriously)

You will need to practice a bit to understand the logic and possibilities of the app, especially if you come from spreadsheets. Though, there are a lot of resources available and the community is welcoming.

Where it could be improved:

  • It could do better to look nice and neat at first sight
  • Complex logic for forms is not possible yet
  • Ergonomics and functionalities are already great but could always be further improved

Still, the repo is accepting contributions and the community is vibrant. So I hope the app will continue to grow for the years to come!

Used Grist for the last 2 years. Haven't touched spreadsheets anymore, be it economics or technical. For everyone who is in need of a a secure and manageable database platform, incl. version control - Grist will be your best choice.

What is Grist?

Grist combines the best of spreadsheets, databases and app builders. Using a familiar spreadsheet interface, organize your information as a relational database and build drag-and-drop dashboards in minutes.

Make the most of your data by ensuring it is well-structured and stored in one place. No duplication, no spreadsheet-wrangling, no merging documents.

Collaborate in real time, protecting your data with custom access rules that control permissions down to the cell. Let everyone work from the same data without compromising privacy or stability.

Sign up for a free team account or host Grist yourself – either way, your data is always yours.
