What is Ideon?
Ideon is an open-source, self-hosted alternative to tools like Heptabase and Kosmik, specifically designed for technical projects. It provides an infinite spatial canvas where users can organize information visually rather than in linear documents or folder structures.
Unlike general-purpose whiteboarding tools, Ideon focuses on project context. It allows users to place and connect various data types on the same board, including live GitHub/GitLab repositories, Markdown notes, code snippets, file attachments, and contact cards. The goal is to create a navigable "mental map" of a project that links code, design, and decision-making in one place.
Key Features:
- Self-Hosted & Private : Runs entirely on your own infrastructure using Docker and Docker Compose. No data leaves your server.
- Infinite Canvas : A boundless workspace for spatial organization of blocks and connections.
- Developer-First Blocks : Native support for GitHub/GitLab repository cards (with live stats), syntax-highlighted code snippets, and Markdown documentation.
- Real-Time Collaboration : Supports multiplayer editing with cursor tracking and instant updates, powered by Yjs and CRDTs.
- Time Travel : Includes a history system to view and revert the workspace state to previous points in time.
- Modern Stack : Built with Next.js 16. Ideon is released under the AGPLv3 license and is intended for individuals and teams who prioritize data ownership and privacy.
