SNAP - SentiNel Application Platform

SNAP is a common architecture for FOSS toolboxes developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) for the scientific processing, analysis, and exploitation of satellite data.

Sentinel-1A mosaic over Europe, generated using 400 ascending scenes from May to July 2015. Processing involved radiometric calibration, multi-looking, terrain correction at 120 m resolution, and spatial mosaicking using ESA’s SNAP/Sentinel-1 Toolbox.

What is SNAP - SentiNel Application Platform?

SNAP is built to support modern Earth Observation missions while retaining the capabilities of older, historical toolboxes, acting as a modern replacement and aggregator for tools like BEAM, NEST, and the Orfeo Toolbox.

Distributed through the STEP (Science Toolbox Exploitation Platform) community portal, the software is divided into two main components: the Optical Toolbox and the Microwave Toolbox. Together, they provide researchers and scientists with generic and sensor-specific processing operators for a wide variety of satellite imagery.

Key Features & Capabilities:

Extensive Mission Support: Native I/O and support for Sentinels 1, 2, and 3, ERS-ENVISAT missions, as well as various National and Third-Party missions.

Dual Toolboxes: Specialized processing for both Optical and Microwave satellite data.

Legacy Integration: Incorporates functionalities from earlier ESA toolboxes (BEAM, NEST, and Orfeo).

Open Source & Free: Developed under ESA’s Scientific Exploitation of Operational Missions (SEOM) programme.

Community-Backed: Supported by the STEP platform, which provides comprehensive documentation, scientific forums, user tutorials, and training materials.
