Terms of Use

Last updated: 6 August 2026

These terms govern your use of alternativeto.net. By using the site you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

alternativeto.net is operated by 27 Kilobyte AB, Box 45142, 104 30 Stockholm, Sweden. In these terms, "we", "us" and "AlternativeTo" mean 27 Kilobyte AB, and "you" means you, the person using the site.

You can browse AlternativeTo without an account. To create an account you must be at least 16 years old, or the minimum age of digital consent in your country if that is lower.

You are responsible for what happens under your account, and for keeping your password and login methods secure. Tell us at hello@alternativeto.net if you believe someone else has accessed your account.

Do not create an account for someone else, impersonate anyone, or run multiple accounts to manipulate votes, rankings or discussion.

You can delete your account at any time. See the Privacy Policy for what happens to your data when you do.

AlternativeTo is a community. When you use it, do not:

  • post spam, advertising or affiliate links disguised as recommendations
  • manipulate votes, likes, rankings or reviews, whether by yourself, with others, or for payment
  • post unlawful, hateful, harassing, threatening, defamatory or sexually explicit content
  • post someone else's personal information
  • post malware, or link to software you know to be malicious
  • post content you do not have the right to post, including copyrighted material
  • scrape, crawl or bulk-download the site outside what our robots.txt allows, or place unreasonable load on our infrastructure
  • attempt to break, probe or circumvent the site's security, rate limits or access controls
  • use the site to build a competing database from our content

We may remove content and suspend or terminate accounts that break these rules. Where it is reasonable to do so, we will tell you why.

Content you post

You keep ownership of everything you post. By posting it, you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, transferable, sub-licensable licence to host, store, reproduce, adapt, publish, translate and display that content, in connection with operating and promoting AlternativeTo. This licence lasts as long as your content is on the site, and continues for content that remains after you delete your account (see below).

You confirm that you have the rights to grant this licence, and that your content does not infringe anyone else's rights.

Content is public. Your contributions are visible to anyone on the internet and may be indexed by search engines, copied, or cached by third parties beyond our control.

After you delete your account, contributions such as comments, reviews and submissions may remain on the site, disassociated from your identity, so that discussions and app data stay coherent. You can ask us to remove specific contributions.

The site itself — its design, code, branding, and the structure and selection of the database — belongs to us or our licensors. The AlternativeTo name and logo are our trademarks; do not use them in a way that suggests endorsement or affiliation without our permission.

If you want to use our data or content beyond ordinary browsing and citation, contact us at hello@alternativeto.net.

AlternativeTo lists software submitted and described by our community.

We may remove, edit or refuse any listing at our discretion, and we may not always give a reason. If you want your application removed from the site, email us and we will try to help.

Listings are not endorsements. We do not test, verify or certify the software listed, and we have no relationship with most of the developers whose software appears here.

AlternativeTo is free to use. The one thing you can pay for is a faster review of an app you submitted.

Submitted apps go into a review backlog, which is usually months long. You can pay a one-time fee to move an app you submitted to the front of that queue. Payment is handled by Stripe; we never see or store your card number. The price is shown at checkout, in the currency stated there, and includes any tax we are required to charge.

What you get. We usually review the submission within one to two business days, and we tell you what would make the listing stronger. Over holidays, or if we are short-handed, it can take up to a week. The fee is a single, non-recurring charge for one submission.

What you do not get. Paying buys a faster review, not approval. The approval criteria are exactly the same as for every other app, and a submission that does not meet them can still be declined. We will tell you why, and what you could change.

If we do not deliver. If your payment goes through but your app is not moved to the priority queue, do not pay again — contact us, or reply to your Stripe receipt, and we will either fix it or refund you.

Refunds. If we decline your app after a priority review, the fee is not refunded: the review is the thing you paid for, and we performed it. If we never reviewed your submission within a reasonable time, or you were charged twice, email us and we will refund you.

Right of withdrawal. If you are a consumer in the EU or EEA, you normally have 14 days to withdraw from a purchase. By buying a priority review you ask us to start straight away, and you lose the right to withdraw once we have completed the review. Until then, you can withdraw and get a full refund by emailing hello@alternativeto.net.

Verified members. Members who have earned verified status are placed ahead of the backlog without paying. Priority review is not the only route to a fast review.

Price changes. We may change the price. The price you see at checkout is the price you pay for that submission.

AlternativeTo helps you discover software; it does not supply it. Downloading, installing and using any software you find here is between you and its developer, under that developer's own terms and privacy policy.

You are solely responsible for the consequences of downloading, installing and using software recommended by AlternativeTo or by our users. Check what you install, and where you get it from.

The site also links to third-party sites and uses third-party services. We are not responsible for their content, availability or practices.

If content on AlternativeTo infringes your rights, is unlawful, or breaks our rules, email hello@alternativeto.net with a link to it and an explanation of the problem. For copyright complaints, include enough detail to identify the work, and confirmation that you are the rights holder or authorised to act for them.

We review reports and remove content where appropriate. If we remove content you posted, you can ask us to reconsider by replying to the notice we send you.

AlternativeTo is a free service provided "as is". We aim for high-quality performance and accurate information, but we make no warranties about availability, uptime, or the accuracy, completeness or currency of anything on the site.

We may change, suspend or discontinue any part of the site at any time. If we discontinue priority review while you have a paid submission still waiting, we will either review it anyway or refund you.

Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or under mandatory consumer protection law.

Subject to that: we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, loss of profit, loss of data, or loss arising from software you found through AlternativeTo. Our total liability to you for any claim relating to the site is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or EUR 100.

If you are a consumer, this section does not affect your statutory rights.

You can stop using AlternativeTo and delete your account at any time.

We may suspend or terminate your access if you break these terms, if we are required to by law, or if we discontinue the service. If you have paid for a review we have not yet carried out, and we terminate your account for a reason other than your breach of these terms, we will refund that fee.

We may update these terms. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the current version. For significant changes we will give notice on the site or by email before they take effect. Continuing to use the site after that means you accept the new terms; if you do not, stop using the site.

These terms are governed by Swedish law. Disputes are subject to the courts of Sweden, with Stockholm District Court as the court of first instance.

If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory law in your country of residence, or of the right to bring proceedings there.

Consumers in Sweden can also take a dispute to the National Board for Consumer Disputes, Allmänna reklamationsnämnden (ARN), Box 174, 101 23 Stockholm. We participate in ARN's procedure.
