Apple announced iOS and iPadOS 16, macOS 13, watchOS 9, and more at WWDC22
Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference kicked off with a keynote presentation as is tradition, which also revealed new hardware and software releases.
iOS 16 is bringing a redesigned lock screen, optical character recognition enhancements, and an overhaul to Apple's Maps app. Additionally, it will bring along a complete revision to CarPlay that will aim to take over your car's entire dashboard, including speedometer, fuel gauge, and AC control. iPadOS 16 will also bring a window manager called "Stage Manager" that operates very similarly to desktop OSes.
The new version of watchOS brings reworks to notifications, new running metrics, and improved sleep and a-fib tracking. Outside of these and a few other small additions and watch faces, Apple Watch updates were relatively sparse.
macOS 13 is called Ventura. It includes the Stage Manager window manager coming to iPadOS 16 while being presented as a way to organize several apps while also focusing on one or two apps at a single time. Spotlight is also being renovated and will now include a file preview without needing to open it. Support for biometric-based passkeys is also being implemented as an alternative to passwords in a system that was developed alongside Google and Microsoft.
Various other smaller quality of life features and hardware-related improvements, such as support for macOS Venture devices to use iPhone cameras on video calls using FaceTime and other video chatting applications for Mac, were also introduced. Availability for all of these new OS updates will be this fall.
