Google is adding a bunch of AI features to Gmail, including AI Overviews and writing tools

Google has just announced a major set of Gemini powered AI features coming to Gmail, with the rollout starting today for users in the United States. The update includes both free and paid options, bringing tools that were previously limited to Google Workspace to all Gmail users. One of the biggest additions (and currently limited to paid subscribers, at least partially) is Gmail AI Overviews, which, similar to its implementation in Google Search, lets users ask natural language questions in the search bar to find specific context in older emails, such as “Who was the plumber that gave me a quote for the bathroom renovation last year?”. AI Overviews also offers free thread summaries for everyone, with no sub required.

Free users are also getting Help Me Write and Suggested Replies for generating drafts and reply suggestions. Premium subscribers will also get access to Proofread for grammar, word choice, conciseness, voice, and sentence structure suggestions, plus AI Inbox, which offers a briefing style view that filters clutter, flags to dos, and surfaces priority messages by identifying VIPs based on frequent contacts, your contact list, and inferred relationships. Google says AI Inbox includes privacy protections but does not share further technical details.

If you’ve been hoping for even more AI tools in your inbox, you’re in luck. The rollout starts now for English speaking users in the US, with more regions and languages expected in the coming months.

Yes, please. Fill my little ass with more AI slop I didn't ask for, thanks.

These features are kinda trivial compared to what competitors like Zero and Edison provide. I just hope it sums into a clean or cleaner interface.

This will make Gmail the preferred email provider of scammers everywhere. Also who doesn't know how to just search "renovation quote" for the example given? I've only seen senile elderly people ask questions to computers.

So...you can use AI to generate emails that you didn't write, and use AI to summarize emails that you won't read...What's the point?

Just like Microslop, the arms race to shove bullshit generators to your face continues, with today's offender being the Digital Gulag. They even disregard the recent murderous hallucinations (1, 2, 3).
