Godot 4.7 adds AreaLight3D, Asset Store overhaul, GABE support, and HDR output

Godot 4.7 has been released with a focus on rendering improvements, editor usability, and Android development. One of its main additions is AreaLight3D, a new node for real time rectangular light sources with softer shadows and improved reflections. This lets developers create effects like glowing screens, illuminated signs, or window lighting without relying on emissive materials and Global Illumination. HDR output is also now supported on compatible displays for 2D and 3D scenes on Windows, macOS, iOS, visionOS, and Linux using Wayland.

The update also replaces the previous Asset Library with the new in-editor Asset Store, adding zoomable previews, asset ratings, and threaded operations so browsing does not block the editor interface. Godot Android Build Environment, or GABE, has reached a stable release, allowing developers to export and publish games directly from Android devices using Gradle.

Godot 4.7 adds offset transform properties to Control nodes, making it easier to translate, rotate, and scale UI elements without disrupting layouts. Shader authors now get real time inline previews in the text shader editor, while DrawableTexture2D adds a simpler way to draw directly on textures. The release also includes additional 3D editor tools, improved snapping, a ruler, gradient support, and several Android, XR, platform, and usability updates that you can check in the official changelog.

But still not deep AI integration, unlike Unreal Engine 6 that allows making slop games from only few dozen prompts. Not even a single buzzword in the announcement like "productivity multipliers", "smart asset" and "persistent, large-scale, live experiences".

Just just the same old engine, but nicely improved for most parts, without any old functionality removed or new ones forced.

Godot 4.7 looks like a solid update! AreaLight3D and HDR support should make creating realistic visuals much easier, while the new Asset Store and Android export improvements are great quality-of-life upgrades for developers.
