ForkLift gets smarter file renaming, QuickLook video previews and smoother SMB integration
ForkLift 4.7.1 is now available as the latest update to the dual-pane file manager and transfer client for macOS. This release introduces a major enhancement to its renaming feature: users can now include file metadata in multi-renaming operations. By accessing embedded data from photos, videos, documents, or audio files, ForkLift enables users to apply structured naming schemes automatically. As a result, photo libraries become more readable and are easier to navigate, with images organized chronologically and music libraries kept consistently named without manual effort.
Building on workflow improvements, ForkLift now displays Server Message Block (SMB) share names in the same manner as Finder, bringing greater consistency to network folder browsing across macOS tools. In addition, users who have the third-party QuickLook Video app installed will find that ForkLift supports previewing additional video and audio file formats, including .mkv, .webm, .flv, and others, matching Finder’s media preview capabilities.
Addressing software reliability, this update also fixes several minor issues in the “Go to Folder” window. It resolves crashes that could occur during sync operations when excluding files by size, and it addresses a key compatibility issue in the upcoming macOS 27 “Golden Gate”, where dragging items in column view was previously not possible.
