Discord rolls out global age verification despite user backlash; most won't need to verify

Discord has officially launched its new age-based safety system, placing users into either teen (13-17) or adult (18+) categories using automated account signals like account age and server participation, never message content. The platform estimates that more than 90% of users won't need to actively verify their age group at all. Those automatically classified as teens gain protections that block access to age-restricted content and settings, while adults report no change in functionality. For users whose automatic classification doesn't match reality, Discord offers verification pathways that don't require IDs or biometric scans, including credit card validation, Apple App Store or Google Play age range sharing, Google Wallet integration, or AgeKey.

This rollout marks the conclusion of a contentious policy evolution that began earlier this year. In February 2026, Discord initially announced plans for mandatory global age verification through face scans or government ID, which triggered widespread privacy concerns and user backlash. The company subsequently paused those requirements, promising to return later in the year with a less intrusive approach. Today's announcement fulfills that promise, introducing multiple non-biometric verification methods and relying primarily on passive signal-based age estimation. Discord emphasized that it does not seek to collect additional personal data beyond age group classification, positioning the updated system as a compromise between regulatory safety requirements and user privacy expectations.
