Microsoft introduces Mico on Windows, a new Clippy-like AI companion powered by Copilot

Just a week after Microsoft announced several new Copilot integrations in Windows 11, including AI Agent capabilities and a new wake-up word, the company is now officially introducing Mico, its new animated AI assistant designed for natural voice interactions.

Clearly inspired by the long-gone Clippy, Mico acts as an "emotionally aware" companion that reacts to tone through facial expressions and color changes, as previously introduced among the new Copilot Avatars. The feature will first launch in the US and will use Copilot’s upgraded memory to recall user preferences and context, along with a new education-oriented Learn Live mode to guide students through concepts with Socratic questions and visual tools.

The update also introduces Copilot Groups, allowing up to 32 participants to collaborate in shared chat sessions while Connectors expand integration with services like Microsoft OneDrive, Outlook.com, Google Drive, and Google Calendar. Enhanced memory capabilities let Copilot retain key details about users’ work and preferences, powering the new Proactive Actions Preview that suggests next steps based on recent activity. Copilot for Health now uses trusted medical sources to answer health-related questions and help users find nearby specialists.

In addition, Copilot in Microsoft Edge can resume previous sessions, provide context-aware answers based on browsing history, and handle actions such as opening pages or managing email. These updates are already live in the United States and will expand to the United Kingdom, Canada, and other regions in the coming weeks.

It's all very good news from Microsoft:

  • "Instead of tech that demands more attention, we’re making tech that gives you back time for the things that matter."
  • "Technology should work in service of people. Not the other way around. Ever."
  • "It’s not just a product – it’s a promise. A promise that AI can be helpful, supportive, and deeply personal."
  • "As we build this, we’re not chasing engagement or optimizing for screen time."

So now it's official, Microsoft marketing team has stopped smoking crack. They've just started enjoying LSD, and Mico is just a ripoff of "Sun Baby" from Teletubbies. The bad trip will kick off the moment they'll realize they're still working at Microsoft, turning their "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" delirium into some "Brazil" bureaucracy.

  • "Spark your creativity, deepen your connections."
  • "Let's go bowling." said The Dude.
