Spotify to introduce AI Persona badges for artists with AI-generated identities
Spotify has announced it will introduce an AI Persona badge for artist profiles that use AI-generated public identities. Starting in mid September 2026, artists can self-disclose AI personas through Spotify for Artists, while Spotify will also review and label profiles that appear to use photorealistic AI-generated identities, even if the artist does not disclose them.
The badge will appear on profile banners, About sections, Search results, and playlist track rows. Tapping it will show whether the AI identity was self-disclosed or assigned by Spotify. Artists who receive the label through Spotify’s review process can confirm their status or appeal the decision, while a listener reporting system for suspected AI personas is also planned.
Artists labeled as AI Personas will be excluded by default from Spotify’s editorial and algorithmic recommendations unless a listener explicitly follows them.

I think this is a sensible move. I have nothing against AI-generated music or virtual artists, but as a listener I want to know what I'm actually listening to and who—or what—is behind it. Clear labeling gives people that choice. I'm more curious about excluding AI Personas from recommendations by default, though. Transparency makes sense to me; deciding what should be recommended is a more complicated question.
There is also a simple way to see if someone is AI on Spotify. A lot of accounts use some stock images as avatars on pageheaders. That's a perfect giveaway. The live artist wants to show his face or full body. He wants to be recognized and unique. AI wants to blend in and not attract too much attention to its identity. It uses something common, none-descript. Of course, a fully AI-generated avatar is a giveaway too.
