Comments and Reviews

Comment summary: Audacity is frequently praised for being a free, open-source audio editor appreciated for its simplicity and extensive functionality. Users highlight its capability for basic recording and editing tasks, although some find the interface outdated and cumbersome. Concerns have risen over data collection practices following its acquisition by MUSE GROUP, likening recent versions to spyware. Alternative open-source forks are suggested to avoid privacy issues while maintaining functionality.

I use the old 2.1.2 version that I got in 2015. Whatever they collect now I do not care. The old program works fine and I like it. It has all the functions I need. I use around 5% of it's functionality. Very useful for daily, regular sound editing.

Yeah, it didn't see a whole lot of development over the past 5-10 years. Some "under the hood" stuff, but not a ton of frontend stuff. The issues will arise if they make the improvements they are talking about. Press release is talking about development of a 3D spectrogram editable with haptic glove. It would be pretty wild to feel a spectrogram. Whether or not they will do it, or if it will actually be useful/adopted is another matter...

Was a great project until it got Aquired by MUSE, they updated their privacy policy to allow them to collect their user's data in plain text, do not use the main branch of Audacity if you don't like Spyware. Users of the Audacity community are making forks of it with the spyware removed from it.

Essential tool for any audio dev. I use it to verify the bitrate of my downloads. High quality and open source. Love it!

An audio editor that does everything.

Unfortunately, it looks like an ancient dinosaur. It's something I have to use, not because I want to use, with the alternative being Ocenaudio which is free & look and feels nice but lacks multitrack & loopback that Audacity does have.

Even the logo is ugly with pure blue headphones and some random bright red & yellow soundwave. You're with Audacity despite all the lacking design because no other have all of it's functions.

An absolute legendary open-source tool. It’s perfect for quick audio edits, podcast mastering, and cleaning up background noise. It might have a slight learning curve visually, but the fact that it is completely free, cross-platform, and highly customizable makes it a must-have in any developer or creator's toolkit.
