  • Android  Distributed as an APK included with the product, not through Google Play. Requires Android 7.0 or newer. Each user enters the address of their own server when signing in.
  • Self-Hosted  Runs on a Linux server (Ubuntu 22.04/24.04 recommended) via a one-command installer, or with Docker Compose. Node.js 22+; no separate database server needed.
  • Docker  docker-compose files are included, plus a Caddy variant that obtains and renews a free HTTPS certificate automatically.
  • Node.JS  Node.js 22 or newer — the one-command installer sets it up for you. The server uses the SQLite engine built into Node, so there is no separate database server to install or maintain.

What is Chatstead?

Chatstead is a self-hosted team chat platform that ensures privacy by keeping all messages, files, and accounts on your server without third-party involvement. It offers a variety of features such as 1:1 and group chats, voice and video calls, text search, and file sharing. Administrators have access to user and content management tools, self-registration options, and white-label branding capabilities.

The platform also includes a native Android app that maintains its own server connection, ensuring notifications are received even when the app is closed. For iPhone and desktop users, the web client can be installed as a PWA.

Chatstead is built with Node.js, Express, and Socket.IO, and uses an inbuilt SQLite engine, eliminating the need for a separate database server. It can be installed with a single command on Ubuntu or Docker Compose and can run on a VPS, on-premise hardware, or an internal network. The full source code is included with every purchase.
