CMS IntelliCAD is highly compatible with AutoCAD, supporting most of its file formats, commands, linetypes, hatch patterns, and text styles. It allows users to use AutoCAD menu files and run Autodesk AutoLISP programs. Custom ADS programs can connect with IntelliCAD libraries, and many third-party ADS programs support IntelliCAD. The software stands out for its compatibility with AutoCAD, advanced CAD features, and seamless Windows integration.

CMS IntelliCAD also has unique features. Its multiple-document interface lets users work on several drawings simultaneously and copy drawing entities between drawings. The IntelliCAD Explorer allows users to manage information and settings and quickly copy layers, linetypes, and other information between drawings. The software fully supports AutoCAD legacy drawings, reading and writing .dwg files in their native format without data loss, from the latest AutoCAD .dwg file version back to version 2.5, including AutoCAD LT.
