I found it worth paying for Crossover (compared to just using plain Wine) for two main reasons: 1. Install tools! In addition to Linux, they have installers for Mac and ChromeOS. And they have tools to make it easier to install and manage applications. 2. They work on the upstream Wine project, so it's one way to pay for Wine development.
Just Wine, but expensive.
It's built on Wine! Why not just use Wine? I don't understand

CrossOver is based on Wine, in https://www.codeweavers.com/about/support-wine they say their development first comes to Wine and then to their CrossOver product. How can it be "much better" if it's practically just Wine? Am I missing something?
This has slightly less horrible support for bottling games than Play on OSX (kin to Play on Linux)
Full price is abominable. Find it on 50%+ discount to bring it down below $20 USD.
Not all major versions are available in the 'purchase' window.
After officially purchasing a license <2 years ago I'm now facing OSX Lion incompatibility. Result: have to buy a new FULL license which costs more than before. That's how you treat existing customers who have free alternatives like Wine? Bye Crossover!
