I use F-Droid in place of the proprietary Google Play Store or services, and it's served me well for years now. If you're looking to move away from Google and its data-munching services to something more open, private and secure, F-Droid is a must.

Not what it used to be. While I love the developers who use the f-droid platform, a vocal minority of fdroid devs/contributors are turning it into a battleground for political grandstanding. Time to switch to alternatives like obtainium

Ah, my dear friend F-Droid. First of all, thanks for the revamp of the mobile interface (+1), even though I’m not a huge fan of seeing Material Design everywhere; I find that the animations take longer than they used to for the same download. F-Droid is still my go-to for discovering new open-source apps, just as much as AlternativeTo, as the redesign of Framalibre isn’t really my cup of tea…

F-Droid is a solid app store for open-source lovers, though some apps can feel a bit rough or early in development. It's great for privacy fans but could use better search and sorting options. Updates come slower since apps are compiled from source, which makes it trustworthy but sometimes a little outdated.

A dream come true! In an age of extensive data collection, having a library of privacy-respecting apps is invaluable. Before discovering F-Droid, finding open-source software for Android was challenging. Now, it’s easy, with everything in one place and a growing number of apps developed under this philosophy.

The only problem with F-Droid is that the app search is not very precise, and we can't use the Shizuki installer.

What is F-Droid?

F-Droid is a directory of free, open-source software applications for Android devices. The F-Droid client lets users browse, install, and update apps directly on their device. It connects to any compatible repositories, with a default link to a repository on f-droid.org containing only free, open-source software.

Unlike standard Android APK installations, F-Droid offers features like update notifications, automatic download and installation of updates, tracking of older and beta app versions, and filtering of incompatible apps. Users can discover apps through categories and search descriptions, access donation and source code URLs, and check repository index signatures and APK hashes for security.

F-Droid's repository doesn't include software that tracks user activity without permission or interacts primarily with non-free network services. However, users can create their own repositories for such software, with the server source available. Users can also add or remove repositories as desired.
