From the perspective of itinerary planning, Furkot is an amazing application. And it's integrated with Tripit, which handles booked itinerary organization/management. So far this is the best application I have found for creating an itinerary/route for an upcoming trip.

You are able to plan your road trip to the finest detail. At the same time, it does things like automatically computing driving times and recommending overnight stops, etc. I enjoy planning future trips and documenting past ones.
