A friend requested that I turn a couple pieces of my line art into medallions via Shapeways. Having come from a background in two-dimensional design (primarily in Adobe Illustrator and other Creative Suite apps) I found myself utterly clueless about how to make the jump into the third dimension. Fortunately, a friend recommended Autodesk Fusion 360. With a little help from the convenient tutorials and online reference, I managed to get the task done without too many curse words, which is quite the personal feat! Having broken the 3D barrier, I found my mind racing with possibilities, and now it's hard to peel myself away from playing around with every idea that comes to mind. The clean interface keeps me from getting too overwhelmed (unlike my attempts to give Blender a go). The ability to bash together a quick sketch, model parametrically, then pop back and forth in the timeline to revise and rebuild, means I can actually improvise on designs and rapidly refine to a workable, printable design. I really wish some of these features were in Illustrator, now!
Short form: I installed for the quick intro to 3D, and I stayed for the depth of functionality. Newbies, fear not!
People say Fusion is a good CAD app. That is irrelevant, because Autodesk is happy to just break your install or subscription whenever they feel like it. To elaborate: Autodesk can push an update to your account that erroneously sends a "subscription expired" error. You will then log out to try and log in, thinking this is unintentional. It is intentional. At this moment, Fusion will delete several critical files, forcing you to reinstall. This is how they try and harass pirates into paying for the app, by directly inconveniencing paying customers like me. Ironically, this does not affect pirates with offline machines, as they will just reinstall their cracked copy.
For the amount of money this costs, which would be unjustifiable no matter how good it is, this is a huge insult. Autodesk's staff is incompetent, lazy and arrogant.
Torrent it if you must use it, don't support this awful company.
I just noticed the popular feature in-place editing has just been turned into a commercial-version only feature.
I HATE CLOUD SOFTWARE where they can just turn off things on your computer that were working before.
There is NO REASON to think that what I'm doing is commercial because I want keep editing components in place, like I was for ~1,5 years.
It would be so easy. Just stop producing new fancy features for the personal edition and think up additional features for commercial users (I understand, if you are making money with the software, could probably pay 60$/month). But no me, 60$ is ridiculous, it would be my single largest monthly expense after rent, you $cums.
But no, the Autodesk execs has to look good in the next quarterly report, NOW. No time to think of valuable features that people would actually pay for. Just go back on what we have already given them.
What a $cumbag company Autodesk is. Like a drug dealer, after users are depended on something, having build there models with certain features included in the personal edition, they just turn them off. Autodesk cannot be trusted, soon they will be turning 3d sketching or whatever the desire. They don't give a shit. I'm not shelling out 60$ every month for you now. You are supposed provide ADDITIONAL value and ask more money.
This company so deserves having ths Fusion 360 source code stolen by a raging nerd that can't edit his death star model efficently anymore.
I will be looking for cracked version of Solidworks, that's the "personal edition" that everybody used 10 years ago :-|
