Still better than Slack in many ways but too bad it's getting replaced by a new product from Atlassian.
It is pretty good.. It is giving good competition to apps like Zulip
That means you can access it from your favourite IM Jabber program, like Pidgin, too. It only implements a subset of it though (no file transfers - at least in the free version), but for basic use it works.
