Modern UI book manager which is FOSS

If you like "modern" Win11 / Mobile-like UI, this might be good. I like my programs to have a real desktop UI with a proper menu bar and the like. Has a dark edge on one side of the page, to imitate the fold in the center of a book. But you can't turn it off, and it is present in double page, single page and infinite scroll modes.

PROS:

  • Free and open source, although Chinese GitHub development raises backdoor privacy and security concerns. Has not been audited to my knowledge.
  • Simpler and more streamlined UI than Calibre, somewhat similar to Kindle, resulting in easier onboarding and less feature complexity and menu bloat for new users.
  • Offers multi-device syncing capability with cloud service of user's choice.
  • Ability to organize books in shelves, add notes and highlights, mark books as favorites for easy access, backup/sync.
  • Users are able to import a wide variety of book formats into the app.

CONS:

  • No android app.
  • No DRM stripping capacity (must use program like Calibre with Obok DeDRM).
  • Developer releases frequently eat up insane CPU, even AFTER the application has been closed, which is concerning.
  • Somewhat sluggish performance, sometimes obtrusively so.
  • Stable release has Google Analytics on by default.
  • My entire reason for writing this review: FOOTNOTES ARE ABYSMAL. Unlike Calibre, they cannot be viewed in line. Worse yet, when clicking on them they often take you to the WRONG footnote, and there is NO simple way to return to the page you were on. For any serious study or research, this is a killer flaw. Navigating books becomes a giant maze of hit or miss and great frustration. This is a software error, not a user error, as the exact same ebook files opened in Calibre have footnotes working properly. If the developers would focus on and fix this, it would be a massive improvement. I hope they read this, fix it, and I can update my review accordingly.

OP-ED: The FOSS e-reader space is dominated by Calibre for good reason. It is the reigning king. I have tried many alternatives, seeking a simpler interface which also allows me to easily sync between devices via cloud storage. Koodo comes close, but its inability to implement footnotes correctly is an Achilles heel for any serious non-fiction reader.
