What is MarkLayer?

MarkLayer is a free, open-source web annotation tool. Draw, highlight text, and pin threaded comments directly on any live webpage, then share a single link so anyone can see your annotations in real time (live cursors, synced drawings, voice/video chat via WebRTC). No accounts, no sign-up, no email required. Available as a web app (paste any URL) and as a Chrome extension for sites the web app cannot embed. Includes an element inspector that captures CSS selectors and AI-ready context, plus an MCP server (marklayer-mcp) so AI coding agents like Claude Code can resolve annotations as a work queue. Self-hostable on Cloudflare Workers. Annotations auto-expire after 90 days of inactivity.
