What is Muse Notebook?

Muse is a macOS note-taking app built to be “notes first” — fast writing, clean organization, and a great editor — with optional AI that runs locally on your Mac. The goal is to feel like a real notebook (not a chatbot with notes attached), while still giving you AI everywhere when you want it, without needing to upload your workspace. At its core, Muse is designed for people who write and revisit a lot of notes: project docs, research, meeting notes, study notes, specs, and “second brain” systems. You can organize notes, navigate quickly, and stay in flow while writing. When you do want AI help, it’s available directly inside the note experience rather than forcing you to switch contexts.

Key capabilities include:

  • AI Assist and quick actions for rewriting, summarizing, clarifying, expanding, and other common editing tasks.
  • AI as you type, with real-time suggestions that feel like autocomplete rather than a separate chat workflow.
  • Ask AI anywhere through a lightweight prompt UI, so you can get an answer or draft without leaving what you’re doing. Memory Links, which automatically surfaces related notes as you write — helping you rediscover context and connect ideas across your workspace.
  • Local model selection, so you can choose different on-device models depending on your hardware and preferences. Technical note support, including running code inside notes (JavaScript/TypeScript and Python via Pyodide) for experiments, calculations, and reproducible snippets.
  • Rich “docs mode” tools like Mermaid diagrams and LaTeX math for specs, study materials, and structured thinking. WikiLinks and fast navigation (including split panes) for building a connected knowledge base and moving through it quickly.
  • Encrypted export and workspace backup so your data stays portable and private.

Muse is built around the idea that your notes are the product: the editor and organization come first, and AI is there to accelerate writing and recall — not to replace your workflow or turn your notebook into yet another chat window. For anyone who cares about staying in flow, keeping context close, and keeping data local, Muse aims to be a practical, daily driver note app with powerful on-device intelligence when needed.
