TOR vs NYM Similarities: Both Tor and Nym are decentralized networks designed to enhance online privacy and anonymity. They use layered encryption and relay traffic through multiple nodes to obscure user identities. Each aims to prevent surveillance and tracking, making them popular among activists, journalists, and privacy-conscious users. Neither relies on a single trusted provider, reducing central points of failure. Differences: Tor routes traffic through volunteer-run relays, focusing on low-latency browsing but vulnerable to exit-node attacks. Nym uses mixnet technology, delaying and blending packets for stronger metadata protection, ideal for high anonymity but slower. Nym also supports incentivized nodes (via NYM tokens), while Tor is entirely volunteer-based. Nym guards against timing analysis; Tor does not.

Nym is the network powering the VPN-like NymVPN icon NymVPN app and other developments (e.g. Pastenym pastebin, nymChat messaging app, Rawbox privacy-focused router).

Nym solves a large-scale problem of the internet: that traffic patterns are visible to anyone observing the network.

Even when content is encrypted, metadata and patterns of communication reveal sensitive information about people and systems. Nym protects internet traffic by routing it through a decentralised mixnet that can be accessed anonymously using zero-knowledge proofs ("zk-nyms").
