I've been using for a week, I guess the only tradeoff is the amount of RAM it can uses.

What is OmniRoute?

Free & Open-Source AI Gateway, one place to connect to. Routing, resilience, free-quota draining, compression and agent protocols — one binary, zero plugins to glue together.

  1. Smart Combos You can combine routing, Set a model to auto or build your own. 19 routing strategies with tier-1/2/3 fall-back — quota out on one provider, switched to the next in milliseconds.
  2. 3-Layer Resilience: Fail at the right level — never the whole thing. Circuit breaker per provider, cooldown per connection, lockout per model. Other keys and models keep serving.
  3. Memory: Persistent conversational memory — FTS5 keyword + Qdrant vector recall, built in.
  4. Free Quota: Pool-deduped, honest counting across 90+ free providers.
  5. Compression: RTK + Caveman stacked on tool output and context.
  6. MCP Server: Built-in server exposing the gateway itself — across 31 scopes.
  7. A2A Protocol: JSON-RPC agent protocol — connect an agent, it drives OmniRoute.

The features are amazing however there are some things you need to be aware of, it needs a minimum of 4GB-6GB of ram, 2 cores 4 is better, ddr3 technology at the least using Linux or docker.

Points to consider is configuring. There are a lot of ways to configure the providers and some are easier than others. This translates into a lot of time if you want to do everything which is not necessary to get it working. Some bits are easy to configure, other bits can be really frustrating.

Big hint for setting up OmniRoute or any other package: Create either a docker or a new pc if you have a home lab network, create a separate user admin account, with a Linux distro like Linux Mint, enable SSH on that instance of Linux with the new user account, and then get a coding LLM / harness like Hermes or OpenClaw to SSH into the machine and install it for you from then official link. Don't let the AI compile it from source, it will take forever and the interface will be very slow.
