Open Audio Analyzer

A free and open-source loudness and spectrum analyzer: fourteen meter modules on a canvas you arrange yourself, for desktop and tablets.

The loudness tab: momentary, short-term and integrated LUFS, true peak, VU, a histogram and a delivery validator on one canvas.

Platforms

  • Mac  macOS 14.2 or later. Universal, for Apple silicon and Intel. The installer carries the VST3 and AU plugins.
  • Windows  Windows 10 1809 or later, 64-bit. The installer carries the VST3 plugin.
  • Linux  A tarball that installs without root, plus an AppImage and a flatpak. Only the tarball carries the VST3 plugin.
  • Android Tablet  Tablets only: Play asks for a shortest screen edge of 600dp, so phones do not see it. Distributed as a closed test for now.
  • iPad  iPadOS 15 or later. Distributed through TestFlight rather than the App Store for now.
The spectrum tab: spectrum analyzer, spectrogram, oscilloscope and stereo cloud on the same 24 column grid.
Eight modules on one canvas. Each one can be resized and moved anywhere on the grid, and the arrangement saves as a preset.
+1
The plugin has no meters of its own. It streams the DAW's audio and transport to the application.

What is Open Audio Analyzer?

Open Audio Analyzer is a free and open-source loudness and spectrum analyzer. Fourteen meter modules, including LUFS, true peak, VU, spectrum, spectrogram, phase scope and histogram, sit on a 24 column canvas you arrange yourself, organised into tabs and saved as presets.

It measures a live input, an audio file, your own system output, or the audio inside your DAW. That last one runs through a headless VST3 or AU plugin which streams the transport along with the audio, so the meters read what the session reads. An AAX build ships in the release archive. A tablet on the far side of the room mirrors a tab over Wi-Fi and draws it with the same painters the desktop uses.

Delivery targets are part of the tool rather than something you remember: pick one, and the readings are judged against it. There is also an oaa command line analyser that exits non-zero when a file misses its target, which is enough to put a loudness check in CI.

Loudness and true peak are held against the EBU Tech 3341 and 3342 conformance cases on Linux, macOS and Windows on every build. Dynamics are published as Open Dynamic Range, a versioned specification with its own numbered conformance cases, so another implementation can produce the same number. A quantity the engine does not measure reads as a dash rather than a zero.

Nothing is collected. No account, no analytics, no telemetry.

Runs on macOS, Windows, Linux, iPadOS and Android. The application is GPL-3.0-or-later and the plugin is AGPL-3.0-or-later.
