What is ProofKey?

ProofKey is a free, open-source Chrome extension that underlines grammar and spelling mistakes as you type and fixes them from a suggestion card, the way Grammarly does, without a backend, an account or telemetry.

In Google Chrome it needs no key: live checking and Fix grammar run on your computer with Chrome's built-in model (Gemini Nano), so the text you check never leaves the machine. For the other actions, such as improving, simplifying, summarizing or translating text, or in browsers without that model, you bring your own API key for a provider such as Google Gemini, xAI or OpenRouter, or point it at a self-hosted llama.cpp server, and the text goes only there.

Site access is optional and granted one site at a time. It also has custom actions, a personal dictionary, writing rules and keyboard shortcuts. Its documentation records which providers and sites were actually tested, and how.
