What is Smoke Crypto Messenger?

Smoke Crypto Messenger is an open-source Instant Messenger that uses the McEliece encryption algorithm, proven secure against quantum computing. It uses its own server software, SmokeStack-Server, to create a decentralized chat ecosystem. The server is an Echo-Server, using the encrypted Echo-Protocol.

Smoke Messenger implements the McEliece Crypto System with four different moduli, including a classic modulus, two variants, and a Super-Modulus developed by Textbrowser.

Smoke's features include:

  • Aliases: Contacts can be preserved without needing a phone number, using a Smoke-ID or an Alias to share the initial public McEliece key.
  • Application lock: The application screen can be locked.
  • Argon2id and PBKDF2 key-derivation functions.
  • Authenticated encryption for chat content.
  • Decentralized: The application doesn't rely on a central infrastructure, requiring at least one connection to a friend or server.
  • No registration or phone numbers required.
  • Encrypted communications.
  • Fiasco forward secrecy: Several keys are used for forward secrecy.
  • Juggling Juggernaut Protocol: Keys are established with the Zero-Knowledge-Paradigm.
  • Obfuscation of resident secret keys.
  • Ozone destinations: Private and public repositories for messaging to offline friends.
  • Post offices for past messages: Past messages are stored and can be sent when connectivity is available.
  • Public and private public-key servers.
  • Group Chat: Semi-compatible with Spot-On via Fire.
  • Steam Protocol: Reliable file sharing over the Echo.
