Also ran into a silent failure issue where latex.exe does not accept files with non-.tex file extensions.
Syntax highlighting and autocomplete are really stupid, it will suggest commands that are unavailable in the document class. And some simple commands like \center are highlighted as errors.
Otherwise TeXstudio seems to be a decent tool.
Very good LaTeX editor. I tend to use VS Code in everyday life, but if the documents gets too big and the VSCode plugin fails, I always resort to TeXstudio which is more powerful in terms of emulation and also gives better error messages. Since darkmode it's even better.
I have found TeXstudio to be the best TeX IDE on MacOS. However, it is far from perfect.
