TrickyBird

A free web proxy that opens a blocked site in your browser tab. Your address bar shows a TrickyBird address, with the site address encoded into it rather than spelled out. A 3-step leak test shows you that.

Been using this for a couple of weeks, mostly to read news sites and watch clips on a work network that blocks half the internet. It opens the site in a normal browser tab, so there is nothing to install and nothing to sign into, which is the whole reason I keep coming back to it instead of asking IT for an exception.

The thing that surprised me is that the address bar never shows the site I opened. I checked, it is our own domain with the destination encoded into the path. My network sees a connection to one host and that is it.

What does not work: anything with DRM. Netflix and the rest are a dead end and the site says so up front rather than letting you find out. A couple of heavily bot-protected sites also stall for me. For reading, video and normal browsing it has been reliable.

4 stars, not five, because the DRM gap is real and because I have had to reload once or twice on the first page of a session.

Thanks for the detail. The address bar is deliberate. The destination is encoded into the path on our own host, and the rewriting keeps the target's name out of what the page loads afterwards.

The reload was a real bug, not your network: the first page of a session could come back as a protection screen and needed one refresh. Fixed and live this week.

DRM we name up front on purpose. It is outside what this is built for, not something we are quietly working on.

Review from a new or low-activity account — shown here, but not counted in the app rating.

Thanks. The rough edges are the part worth hearing about, so if you remember which sites or what went wrong, say and we will look.

Amazing, the most quickly proxy for games, youtube and social media

Thanks! If any of those ever stops behaving through us, say so here and we will chase it.

What is TrickyBird?

TrickyBird is a web proxy, not a VPN. You paste a link and it opens that one site in the same tab, rewritten as it loads. Wherever TrickyBird has to carry the address of the site you open, it carries it encoded rather than spelled out, so the address bar shows a TrickyBird address instead of the site's, and it will not always look the same, since sometimes it is only numbers. TrickyBird's own pages are in 9 languages. A 3-step leak test walks you through your own address bar, the page source and the request headers, and names the one value TrickyBird writes the site's name into, and a per-site status page carries only the sites TrickyBird has opened through the proxy and seen render, under a last-checked date. TrickyBird has no account and keeps a small access log for at most 48 hours. The log writes one line for every request the proxy makes on your behalf, so it holds the hostname of each site or service a page loads from, not only the address you typed, together with a shortened form of your IP address and basic response details. Separately, TrickyBird counts requests against your full IP address to stop bulk automated abuse; that count carries no destination and no session, and it expires on its own. An optional Chrome extension routes a single browser tab through the proxy and leaves every other tab alone.
