After finding out CasaOS was based in Shanghai and they already sold customer data (emails) and got caught there was no way I could put my personal data on a device running that.
I searched for a week and finally stumbled on Umbrel. I just installed it and haven't done much yet but the appstore is phenomenal and it feels like the apps were curated just for me!
Regarding licensing: umbrelOS is licensed under the PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0 license. TL;DR — You're free to use, fork, modify, and redistribute Umbrel for personal and nonprofit use under the same license. If you're interested in using umbrelOS for commercial purposes, such as selling plug-and-play home servers with umbrelOS, etc please reach out to us
DO NOT RECOMMEND. Umbrel seems like an amazing product until you try to do anything that requires HTTPS or connecting a subdomain. Umbrel does NOT support HTTPS and has refused to implement it for four years. They advise to use Tor instead. Umbrel OS has so much potential but it is impossible to do anything without investing a great deal of time to find workarounds to something that should be built into their software. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
Not actually open source. It's using some sort of non commercial license (polyform license is not OSI or FSF approved for very obvious reasons) that makes them the only ones who can profit despite them taking lots of community contributions.
Exact. Because of that license I don't trust UmbrelOS and I prefer CasaOS which is open source.
