This messaging protocol is so underrated, people are always lured into all these hyped centralized IM services which often turn out to be nasty traps full of surveillance, scams, forced ads or borked functionality, while XMPP is standing meekly in the corner since times of ICQ, yet no one seems to bother!
If your current messaging service is giving you headache, do yourself a favor - relieve your suffering by looking into Jabber/XMPP.
i'm leaving no rating because i'm absolutely confused how to use xmpp. i might be stupid
You choose a server (here's a good list https://list.jabber.at/ ), and register an account with it. The procedure varies, but once you get your credentials (an XMPP/Jabber address looks much like an email address), you enter them in a client chat program of your choice, e.g. Gajim or Pidgin, and then you add people to your contact list. Does not matter if they use the same server as you are or not. Hope that helps.
