What is Zoteus?

Zoteus is an open-source MCP server for Zotero, in TypeScript. Claude, Claude Code, Cursor and any MCP client get hybrid keyword and semantic search, PDF passages with page locators, bibliographies in any CSL style, add-by-DOI, group libraries, and writes: items, tags, collections, attachments, and PDF annotations anchored to quoted text. It runs alongside the Zotero desktop app as an add-on to it, not a plugin inside it: reads and some writes go to the running app without a cloud key, and the Zotero Web API is the fallback for sync, group libraries and when the app is closed. Self-hosting is free with every feature (MIT); an optional hosted connector exists for claude.ai.
