Brave Translate is not fully open-source as it relies on Lingvanex, a proprietary third-party engine, for translations. While Brave claims to strip IP addresses before sending text to their servers and Lingvanex for processing, the text itself is still shared temporarily with these servers. This means that sensitive content may be exposed, even though Brave asserts that no data is retained after the translation request is completed. For privacy-conscious users, this setup provides slightly better privacy than Google Translate but falls short compared to Firefox Translate, which performs all translations locally on the user’s device, without sending any data to Mozilla servers or proprietary third-party. Brave Translate does not offer the same level of privacy as Firefox Translate. Brave’s server-side approach may also result in slower performance, as some users have reported. A fully local translation option, like Firefox’s, would be a significant improvement for privacy-focused users.
