Veracrypt is a program for creating an encrypted container in which you can hide files protected by various encryption algorithms. It is excellent and extremely useful, but not for syncing files to the cloud because files you change inside the veracrypt container won't be seen to change by an external sync program. Veracrypt addresses a different need to Cryptomator.

Cryptomator encrypts single files and is a good choice for Cloud Sync.

Veracrypt creates virtual encrypted drives that are not a good choice for Cloud Sync.

Veracrypt provides superior security and is a better choice for local encryption, but Cryptomator is designed to be far more convenient for usage on cloud storage, encrypting each file individually. Use Veracrypt for local storage or if you plan on uploading one fixed archive to the cloud. Use Cryptomator for most cloud applications.

Rclone offers encryption, as well as Cryptomator, PLUS can sync your files with the cloud so there is no need to install proprietary cloud sync clients.

Rclone is not an alternative to cryptomator. Rclone just transfers the files between local and cloud, and does not concern itself about encryption of the files on either ends. It just syncs and transfers the files properly and securely.

If you are on Windows, use Veracrypt. But also, change to Linux if you can.

Now that you are on Linux, natively encrypt your whole file system with LUKS and be happy, never worry about it again. Use Luks for other drives too.

Picocrypt is more suited to encrypting individual files for local storage, not for encrypting groups of files for cloud storage like Cryptomator. Both are excellent applications, with different use cases.

If you intend to use Cryptomator for encrypting just a few files locally, Picocrypt may be superior.
