Switched from Total Commander to FreeCommander to Double Commander. If you worked with either one of these, you'll be instantly familiar with Double Commander.

For me, it's a must have tool. Cannot work without it. Explorer doesn't come even close to functionality offered by these file manager tools.

The only open-source file manager with flat view. I don't need to say more.

Good. Just one small issue, it has no space for too many files when viewing in columns view, and this can be bypassed by using briefs view. For example impossible to generate new text file when columns view file list is full, because no space to click right click on empty space. Probably can be fixed with some customization.

A good dual-pane file manager, a bit slow I agree, but it has nice file comparison and advanced search features.

I can see the appeal, but, for casual users, Double Commander is incredibly complicated to navigate. A great project, but not for me.

What is Double Commander?

Double Commander is a cross-platform open source file manager with two panels side by side. It is inspired by Total Commander and features some new ideas.

  • Archives are handled like subdirectories. You can easily copy files to and from archives. Supported archive types: ZIP, TAR GZ, TGZ, LZMA and also BZ2, RPM, CPIO, DEB, RAR.
  • All operations working in the background
  • Extended search function with full-text search in any files
  • Configurable button bar to start external programs or internal menu commands
  • Total Commander WCX, WDX, and WLX plug-ins support
