I really love the fact that it's a stand-alone app versus solely a browser extension, even though it does give you the option to install an extensions for any/all major browsers as well.
Downie supports an incredibly long list of compatible video hosting sites. My favorite part is the built in search function. I searched for a band I liked on youtube, found the latest concert recording, and Downie immediately started to download it, in the highest possible definition, by default! It's perfect for all my video-downloading purposes. It also supports 4k!
This is one of the easiest downloaders, and it's able to download from almost any site. Most of the time it is able to figure out how to download the video automatically. When it can't figure it out, it has the User-Guided Extraction mode. In that mode, it opens its own browser and lists the video feeds that it sees. You select the one you think is correct. You can try several times until you find the correct one. The browser also allows you to log into a site if the video you want is behind a paywall.
FYI, it can't download Netflix videos or anything similarly encrypted, but I don't know of anything that can.
