What is Egidio?

Egidio is an Android app that detects scam calls and messages by recognising manipulation patterns rather than matching known numbers against a blocklist.

All analysis runs entirely on the device. No call content, message content or phone number ever leaves the phone, and the app works without an account: no sign-up, no identifier, no advertising ID.

The free tier blocks unwanted calls, including 94 regulated telemarketing and premium-rate number ranges across 22 countries, applied immediately on install rather than after a number has been reported by the community.

The paid tier extends protection to messaging: WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger, Instagram and 183 messaging apps in total, plus cross-channel correlation that links a call and a message belonging to the same attempt, a second-opinion check on a suspicious SMS, email or screenshot, dual-SIM protection, exportable history and a weekly report.

Egidio recognises 12 scam archetypes and ships 62,810 active detection patterns, with thresholds calibrated per country across 23 markets, and an interface available in 16 languages.

The app's network architecture and the source code that touches the network are published for independent verification at github.com/Egidio-app/egidio-transparency, along with a verification protocol anyone can run against the released APK. The detection engine itself is closed, for the same reason antivirus vendors do not publish their signatures.

Requires Android 12 or later.
