Works great in censorship heavy environments. However, that may be due to the relatively new nature of the VPN. So far Obscura connects quickly with minimal speed impacts.
You're absolutely right that VPNs don't provide the same level of anonymity as a mixnet like Tor. Obscura VPN might advertise some unique features, but ultimately, with a VPN, we're still connecting to servers that our data passes through. Using Mullvad VPN directly could be a better option, as it's more well-known for privacy and security. However, for those who are looking for faster speeds and less anonymity, Obscura VPN could be a suitable choice
Tor isn't a mixnet but a darknet which can suffer from targeted attacks deanonymizing users traffic. A mixnet like
Nym for exemple goes much further and is way harder to attack. It's still slow to use so not worth for all usecase but bring stronger anonymity. Their VPN (which is still in beta) enable using the mixnet or a wireguard setup similar to Obscura but it is available on almost every OS while Obscura is only available on macOS.
The marketing on this is crazy. It's still a VPN we are far from the anonymity provided by a mixnet. I would rather use MullvadVPN directly than using someone else VPN to get to a Mullvad hop.
