Usually the software can recover the files that are in "excellent" condition (without overwritten sector). But sometimes, even when the software displays at the end of the so-called recovery that everything was fine, it can be completely wrong (all files are scrambled and can't be opened), so you must verify manually the results.
NB : this software is fast only without deep scan

It takes hours to scan and gets preview only. Need to buy license to restore data!
Not only does the search claim there is a 'free version' it allows one to go through HOURS of 'recovery' and even click the 'recover button' you're fooled into thinking it works until the CLUE of 'zero' files recovered is displayed and you intuitively realize you've been scammed into installing it! I'd never support such a company regardless how well it works; TestDisk does seem to work, although the names are not recovered, luckily!
You need to pay money to recover the files, only the scan is free which is useless, be aware of that.
This app saved my life on more than one occasion. It is advisable to install it in a partition other than the unit where the file/s are located.

While Recuva itself may be a good program, too many search leads try to point to it as a disk repair tool, which it is not. The official website link is a CCleaner site which is another software from Piriform the parent company which was bought by Avast. This means that when CCleaner posts info on the product, it is a seller vs disinterested party.
Freemium and not open source but good. Enough for home users.
