What is ServerCrate?

ServerCrate is privacy-first, zero-knowledge offsite backup hosting for Restic over SFTP, built for sysadmins, developers, and homelab users. Repositories are end-to-end encrypted on your machine before upload — your password never reaches our infrastructure, by design.

Positioned between BorgBase (Borg-based, simpler) and rsync.net (raw SFTP, no portal), ServerCrate offers a managed Restic-specific experience: self-service portal, per-user ZFS vault isolation on dedicated hardware, daily replication to a separate pool, and optional Bitcoin payment via self-hosted BTCPay for privacy-conscious billing.

Free tier: 10GB, 7-day retention, no credit card required. Paid plans from $5/mo. Designed for ransomware resilience, disk failure scenarios, and infrastructure compromise — backups stay offsite, isolated, and encrypted with keys we never see.

Key features:

  • Native Restic compatibility (no proprietary tooling, full portability)
  • SFTP protocol (universal, scriptable, no lock-in)
  • Zero-knowledge encryption (client-side only, AES-256)
  • Per-vault ZFS isolation with daily NVMe replication
  • Fixed pricing, no egress fees, no bandwidth caps
  • Bitcoin payment option via self-hosted BTCPay (rare for backup hosts)
  • TOTP 2FA, audit logs, account activity history
  • Designed for Proxmox, Docker, bare-metal Linux, BSD, macOS

ServerCrate is for users who want managed backup reliability without sacrificing control, privacy, or simplicity — and without locking their repository format to one vendor. Your Restic repo is yours; you can rsync it elsewhere at any time.
