What is Tablesmit?
Tablesmit is a free, open source table builder for writers, analysts and researchers who need one clean structured table in a document or report without the overhead of a full spreadsheet.
You build your table directly in the browser. Set column types — Text, Number, Currency, Percentage or Date — and Tablesmit handles the formatting automatically. Drag to resize columns, merge cells for grouped headers, freeze the header row for long tables, and add a table caption that carries through to every export format.
When you are ready to export, choose from PDF, Excel, LaTeX, CSV, PNG or JPEG. The LaTeX export generates a complete tabular environment with column alignment derived from your column type and special characters escaped automatically — paste it straight into your .tex file without touching a single line of syntax. The PDF output is clean enough to hand to a client or submit with a paper without manual cleanup.
Smart paste means you can copy a range of cells in Excel or Google Sheets and paste directly into Tablesmit. It reads the tab-separated data and reconstructs the table automatically. Word tables paste in too.
Tablesmit works completely offline as a Progressive Web App. No account is required, no data leaves your browser, and the tool is free forever. The source code is available on GitHub under the MIT license.
Built with React 18, TypeScript, and Vite. Tested with 1,083 passing tests across 139 test files. Lighthouse 90+ across all metrics. Available in eight languages including Arabic with full right-to-left support.
