Premise that I am not an IT professional and was introduced to UCS by Owncloud, which uses UCS since version 10 as "package container. I downloaded a VirtualBox machine and ran it. I must say the various settings are not hyper intuitive for the non pro, but with a little trial and error I got it working. Since it is an integrated environment, It manages easily the digital certificates that make my cloud secure and it allows me to run my own cloud service from a small computer at home. There are many other software services offered, but I must say that regretfully, they are a lot harder to use or, in some cases not working, so it has been a little frustrating, because they are really cool. For instance, a package called guacamole would allow to remote desktop to other computers in my network from within a web browser, but Univention admits that it is probably not working. One cool package that works is a Wordpress implementation, which I have tested and seems to do its job. Altogether, for non pros, I would give it a more than passing grade.
Great alternative to Microsoft Small Business Server

Since a long time, Univention Corporate Server is already available as Amazon Machine Image in AWS, so setup a public- or virtual-private-cloud-instances of Univention Corporate Server, actually in version 3.2 rev 2. This offers a lot of amazing scenarios, to provide different services how mail-services, file-services etc. in cloud. It´s already possible, several instances of UCS on premise and "in cloud" to work together. AWS itsself provides a lot of security-issues to secure any connection beetween local and cloud-instances of UCS, how virtual private clouds, virtual private networks or network acls. Additionally Univention provides an amazing app "OPENVPN4UCS" in App-Center ( https://www.univention.de/produkte/ucs/app-katalog/app/details/openvpn4ucs ), to secure connnections to cloud-ucs-instances.
