I have used it for years and closely followed is development. I moderate at the IrfanView support forums so I get to learn what amazing tricks it can do with Batch operations and command lines that I would seldom need myself.
The 64-bit version can open a 256 Megapixel NASA image in less than 7 seconds, and is able to load large RAW images too, much quicker than the 32-bit version. It is no substitute for PhotoShop, but it does a lot.
Contrary to popular belief, it is not free, except for personal use. Commercial users are morally obliged to pay for registration of €10 per copy, which is next to nothing even for a small business user. Education and charity use is also free; and there are no nasty surprises if you fail to register your copy.
Pro: A free application with very rich functionality for batch image renaming. Cons: thumbnails are not stored in the database, but are generated each time each folder is opened. When trying to register on the official forum, the following message appears: "Error. The administrator has banned your email address. You will need to change your email address in order to continue. If you think this is done in error, please click here to contact the administrator". When you click on the "here" link, the following message appears: "400 Bad Request. nginx".

FOSS, lightweight, extensible
good, functional, quite ugly, some of the default config settings are a bit strange.
It's ok, but the interface is clunky. I've used this for a couple of months. Here are the main reasons I'm moving away from it:
1- If you are looking at large images, it automatically opens them at the largest possible window size for your screen. If you scale the window down, the image does not scale with it, so you have to zoom out as well. If you try to view the next image, instead of keeping your zoom settings it opens the next image at the largest possible window size again.
2- The crop options are limited. You can hand-draw a box and then crop to that, but if you want specific pixel dimensions you have to use the image resize/resample menu option, and then it just crops those exact pixels out from the centre, without scaling the image to the widest point. I typically want an image viewer to be able to quickly scale and crop to thumbnail size. Crop should be a top-level menu item for an image viewer, as should rotate. It took me a while to even find the options (this is true of other features in irfanview - the menu items are complex and unclear)
3- the roadkill splat logo is really offputting.
The best, most complete, free viewer I've ever tried. Beats any paid viewer I've ever tried. Mega features. Solid.
