Mailfence is the cheapest and gives most functional features - i.e. features you can see and use (such as a calendar and webdav). They have much better security than most mailproviders but e-mails sent in clear text are stored non encrypted. That is why they can provide pop3 and smtp without a "brige" program. They are based in Belgium that has nice privacy laws. I ve had a couple of issues but their support team was very helpful, it was solved in matter of minutes. It fits my needs and is easy to use. Totally recommend this.

Seems to work well. Signed up with Proton email for verification. Doesn't do Pop Mail on free tier.

One thing to note is that MailFence will keep you logged in (session) up to 1 day, while Proton will keep logged in indefinitely unless you log out or after 60 days of inactivity. Gmail has no fixed automatic session expiration.

There is another minus - the link to confirm the registration of an account on the social network Twitter (X) does NOT arrive on the virtual mail of the MailFence website. Checking the «Spam» folder does not give anything. There is no such problem in Proton Mail & Tuta Mail virtual mail.

Another email mandatory to register, when provided with a valid gmail account, detects it as spam and blocks creating account for 48 hours with a list of possible reasons.

I can confirm this. I find it stupid to ask for an extra email to register an email. If I had one already, would I need another one? Not all have another email to register. And if you want anonymity, it isn't the way to go.

I used to have a Gmail account, but I wanted to try something else as I discovered how deep some companies are spying on us. I heard about Mailfence on a forum and I decided to try it out. I am really satisfied with the simple interface and it is good to have some granted privacy.
