What is PrivateTranscribe?

PrivateTranscribe is a Windows dictation app. You press a global hotkey, talk, and the finished text is pasted where your cursor already is. Any app, any editor, any browser, any chat, any IDE.

Transcription runs on local Whisper by default, so the raw recording stays on your PC while it is turned into text. Cloud transcription is available but optional and off by default. Every Whisper model is included, CUDA acceleration works on compatible NVIDIA GPUs, and dictation covers 57 languages with auto-detect.

The free Starter tier needs no account and gives you 1,000 transcribed words per day, with every Whisper model and CUDA acceleration included. Pro is a one-time 29 EUR payment that removes the daily limit. There is no subscription.

We have been building it since February 2026, 1,380 commits so far, because every other dictation tool stopped at "press key, get text". So it does the things around dictation too. It lowers or mutes everything else on your PC while you dictate, and holds your call app's push-to-mute key so nobody on Discord hears you. It learns your names and jargon. It can clean up a dictation with a local model before pasting it.

It also reads back. Select text anywhere, press the hotkey, and it is spoken in a voice that runs on your machine, marking the sentence it is on in Notepad, Chrome and Edge. And Pro includes Converse, a spoken conversation with Claude Code where you can talk over it and it stops straight away.
