WinNC was first released prior to 2007 (v4.5) In the last 13 yrs it has attracted one vote here on AlternativeTo.net Hardly the mark of a popular program.

WinMC home page is very flamboyant, with a lot of white space to pad out the first impression. The whole website is very lacking in usefull information to make an informed judgement. No screen shots, and a total lack of a features list. The home page has plenty of hype but very little substance considering there is no trial period mentioned that I could find. The home page is mostly a list of of version numbers with dates and fixes. No legacy downloads. It appears to me that WinNC is buy-to-try ... no indications of a free trial.

My needs include preserve date attributes, handle long path names, sync locked files, remove dead files/folders. No mention on the website that I could find with a web-page search engine. No sign of help pages, but granted I have not tested WinNC. FAQs dont rate (IMO) as forensic Help .

There are several other file managers, claiming to be "like Norton Commander" It's what the developers don't say that has left me in serious doubt about WinNC. Without some more serious "meat on the bones" I cannot justify paying for WinMC.

I own and use WinNC on a daily basis. I love the program, if you have used Norton Commander back in the DOS-Win95 days.You will find this program to be an excellent replacement. However, since buying this program I have found an very good FREE alternative "Free Commander". Look it up it is on this site.You will not be sorry.

What is WinNc?

WinNc is a tabbed file manager for Windows

WinNc is still downwards compatible with Windows 8 and 7 and uses the modern Windows 10 flat interface. This NC clone file manager is inspired on the dual panel idea of the old file manager Norton Commander. It has shortcuts to all the Windows 10 special folders and the tabbed interface allows you to organize your data by project. Projects can include virtual links to files and folders from all over the disk that are related to that project tab. With a new Windows 10 flat interface WinNc can do all the basic tasks you expect from a file manager like copy, move, delete, compress, uncompress and create links. But WinNc also converts audio, burns files on DVD and cd, creates iso files and you are able to synchronize your files. From zip files, it allows the creation of self extraction .exe files.

Filemanager actions

WinNc uses logical colors for the file actions so you can see if a file is being copied (Green), being moved (Orange) or being packed (Yellow). WinNc allows you to perform multiple tasks by setting the maximum parallel tasks to more than one task. Otherwise WinNc will wait to start the new action until the previous action has finished. There is a built-in file viewer supporting all the popular formats. It has a built in slideshow viewer, an audio player and a video player for quickly browsing through your media.

Quick Access makes file management easier

WinNc will keep track of folders where you have worked in the past. You can quickly access those folders by clicking on the Quick Access icon or by pressing the spacebar. Then in the Quick Access box, start to type the location of interest, like ‘windows’ or ‘download’ or ‘projectfolder’. It will show a list of matching folders ordered by match rank. Furthermore, you can make frequently used folders favorite by pressing the blue star and you can also add more tags (search words) to the actual folder.
